MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is a networking protocol that is used to transmit data packets over a network. It works by encapsulating the data packets in a layer of header information that includes a label, which is used to route the packets to their destination.

MPLS is commonly used in enterprise networks and service provider networks to transmit data between locations. It is particularly useful in situations where there is a need to prioritize certain types of traffic or to establish dedicated connections between locations.

MPLS is also used in a number of other applications, including virtual private networks (VPNs), traffic engineering, and quality of service (QoS). It is a flexible and efficient protocol that is widely used in a variety of networking environments.
